Daily Market Commentary for April 30, 2009

Chrysler corporation filed for bankruptcy protection today. (read more at )

Economic data released today:

Personal Income and Outlays:
U.S. Personal Income fell 0.3% in March compared to consensus of a drop by 0.2%; U.S. Personal Spending fell 0.2% in March compared to consensus of a drop by 0.1%; March PCE Core Price Index rose at rate of 0.2% on the month; arch PCE Core Price Index rose at rate of 1.8% on the year; March PCE Price Index unchanged rate on the month; March PCE Price Index rose 0.6% on the year; February Personal Income unrevised at drop by 0.2%; February Spending Revised to increase by 0.4% from increase by 0.2%.

Employment Cost Index:
U.S. 1Q Employment Cost Index rose 0.3% compared to consensus of an increase by 0.5%; U.S. 1Q Employment Cost Index rose 2.1% from a year ago; U.S. 1Q Employment Cost Index gain smallest on record.

Jobless Claims:
U.S. Jobless Claims for week of April 25 fell 14K to 631K compared to survey of an increase by 5K; U.S. Continuing Claims for week of April 18 increased by 133K to 6,271,000; U.S. Jobless Claims revised for week of April 18 to 645K from 640K; U.S. Continuing Claims hit 13th-straight record high.
Chicago Purchasing Management Index (PMI):
U.S. PMI April Prices Paid Index came in at 28.4 versus March reading of 34,1: U.S. PMI April Supplier Deliveries came in at 45.4 versus March reading of 48.4; U.S. PMI April Employment Index came in at 31.8 versus March reading of 28.1; U.S. PMI April New Orders Index came in at 42.1 versus March reading of 30.9; U.S. PMI April Index came in at 40.1 versus March reading of 31.4.
