Investors anticipated the release of the Federal Reserve's Beige Book this afternoon, while stocks took a break. (read more at

Economic data released today:

MBA Mortgage Applications:
U.S. MBA Market Index rose 17.0% at 648.3 compared to Last Week 554.1; U.S. MBA Purchase Index rose 9.5% at 304.1 compared to Last Week 277.6; U.S. MBA Refinance Index rose 22.5% at 2651.2 compared to Last Week 2164.1.

ICSC Chain Store Sales:
U.S. ICSC/Goldman Sachs Chain Store Sales rose 0.6% in week of September 5; U.S. ICSC/Goldman Sachs Chain Store Sales fell 0.1% on the year.

Redbook:
U.S. Retail Sales First Week of Sep rose 0.2% versus August; U.S. Retail Sales First Week Sep fell 2.4% versus September a year ago; U.S. Retail Sales fell 2.4% Week Ending Sep 5 versus a year ago.

Fed Beige Book:
Economy continued stabilizing July, August; most districts reported flat retail sales; most said 'cash for clunkers' helped sales; downward pressure on home prices in most areas; labor markets remained weak in most districts; loan demand called weak; credit standards tight; wage pressure remained minimal across districts; consumer prices called steady in most districts.
